We’re getting our January sales advice in early this year. With VAT going up to 20% on 4 January, the wise shopper needs to be quick off the blocks. And of course, the wise shopper should also shop the Energy Saving Trust Recommended way.
You may think, ‘we would say that’. And you’re right, we would. But the stats are in our favour.
If the same number of people, buying the same three top-selling items from last January – flat-screen TVs, set top boxes and washing machines – purchased only for Energy Saving Trust Recommended products, they could collectively save almost £40 million pounds and 165,000 tonnes of carbon.
if shoppers simply went for the blue label, not only would they save cash in the short run – they’d also save energy and money during the lifespan of the product.
Let’s put it this way: if you choose a flat-screen ESTR 32″ TV over the least efficient flat screen 32″ TV available, it will save you £70 in bills over the lifetime of the TV. If you’re thinking about getting a new fridge-freezer in the sales, buying an Energy Saving Trust Recommended one instead of a standard (market average) one, you could spend £104 less over its lifetime.
But back at the sales – in the first three months of 2010, well over 400,000 products carrying the Energy Saving Trust Recommended logo were sold. The biggest ESTR brands in the flat-screen TV market were Samsung (40%), Sony (35%) and LG (10%). Fridges and freezers, you enquire? Why, that would be Indesit (24%), Hotpoint (14%) and Bosch (13%). The top brands for removing those festive-season stains wth an energy-saving spin cycle were Hotpoint (38%), Beko (17%) and LG (13%).
We’ll leave the last word to Peter Bromage, our Head of Energy Saving Trust Recommended and veteran January sales bargain hunter: ‘In these current times of financial austerity, it’s great that we not only have opportunities such as the January sales to save money, but we also have the ability to save energy at the same time. Energy Saving Trust Recommended products are a valuable investment and addition to any home. Whether it’s a top of the range flat screen TV to an energy efficient washing machine, there really is a product which can help you save energy and will make your money go further’.
Just make sure you remember rechargeable batteries for the remote!
